Sounds~Write featured in Australian Media

The following article appeared in 'The Riverina Leader'  on 7th January 2007:

Teaching staff in the junior school of Wagga Christian College spent their first week of holidays back in the classroom being trained in an exciting new literacy program.

Sounds-Write was first developed in England by a group of educational experts and it targets a whole-of-school literacy-based program.

It uses mediated learning focusing on sound to accelerate literacy skills of students and has been developed for individuals or a whole-class situation.

Course presenter Mary Gladstone has been teaching across Australia since 2003.

"It uses explicit instruction and is structured, working from simple to complex concepts," Ms Gladstone said.

School principal Hugh MacCallum said he was proud of his staff for their efforts.

"Our teachers will be ahead of the crowd in this innovative new way of teaching literacy," Mr McCallum said.

"Sounds-Write is different from other programs in that it always works from sound to symbol. The improvements in student self-esteem and the impact of Sounds-Write on their learning is going to make a huge difference in a student's end results. This is especially so when Sounds-Write is used in the early years of a child's schooling."
